The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly presented its challenges for public safety response. One thing that we have learned is that proper use of personal protective equipment is highly effective in prevention of spread of the virus to healthcare workers. To that end, Westfield Fire Department is adding a new level of respiratory protection for our responders. The powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) affords the maximum level of protection by directing filtered air into a hood that is worn by the medical technician. These are used when responders will be in close contact with patients performing life saving respiratory procedures such as airway management or providing CPR. We ask that when calling 9-1-1 please cooperate with the public safety dispatcher who will be asking a series of questions that will allow us to be prepared when we arrive at the scene of the emergency. This does not delay response as most questions are asked while we are responding to the call.
