The Westfield Fire Department offers these tips for grilling safely:
-Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
-The grill should be placed away from the home or deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
-Children and pets should be at least 3 feet away from the grill area.
-Keep your grill clean by removing grease and fat buildup from the grates and trays below.
-Never leave your grill unattended.
In addition to these tips, the Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO) would like to remind Westfield residents who might reside in one of the many multi-family apartment buildings within the district, that grill use and storage are prohibited on 2nd and 3rd story balconies, and must be pulled away from the building at least 10 ft. if being used on a 1st floor deck or patio. This code has been set forth by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and is found in the Connecticut State Fire Prevention Code. Any persons found in violation of this code are subject to penalties set forth by their buildings management company and/or State and local Fire Marshal’s Office.
If you have any questions pertaining to the use of grills, please contact the Westfield Fire District Fire Marshal’s Office.
